Sumitomo Machinery Corporation of America (SMA), U.S. headquarters for Sumitomo Drive Technologies, has just received two vertical milling machine centers to increase their ring gear manufacturing capabilities and capacity. These machining centers will replace two existing twenty-three year old machines.  This represents the first phase of an extensive machine tool replacement initiative.

The new vertical milling machines are state of the art, highly accurate, user friendly models.  The ring gear, a critical reduction component in SMA’s signature Cyclo® product, requires high precision machining with tight tolerances. The new machine tools will provide these features along with reduced cycle times for faster production.

In addition to the improved machining capabilities, SMA has added a new production line for their Bevel BuddyBox® product.With this addition, SMA will have an initial capacity of 1,680 subassemblies per month.  Lean manufacturing techniques will provide maximum flexibility and adaptation to increased sales demand.

Sumitomo is dedicated to increasing their manufacturing capabilities in a market that continues to expand throughout the Americas.  Sumitomo has launched a 2015 Manufacturing Vision includes additional manufacturing capabilities and expansion plans in their locations throughout the Americas to help support continued growth of their products and services.

To date, the following steps in Phase I of the 2015 Manufacturing Vision have been completed:

• Gear machining equipment has been purchased and installed to increase bevel gear manufacturing capabilities
• Two vertical milling machines have been purchased to increase ring gear manufacturing capabilities
• Increased production lines for Bevel BuddyBox® to increase capacity
