EP.NA Premium Efficiency Integral Motors

Premium Efficiency

Protecting our environment is key to providing a safer future for generations to come. Due to rising emissions and global climate change, it is our duty to do our part in reducing our carbon footprint and conserving energy in any way we can.

The Department of Energy (DOE) has a mandate to update the efficiency regulation of various products used in the United States. In May of 2014, the DOE issued a new ruling expanding the scope of the mandatory Minimum Efficiency Performance Standard (MEPS) for Induction Motors.
Because of this, Sumitomo Machinery Corporation of America is releasing of a new motor series (EP.NA) that complies with the new efficiency requirements set by the Department of Energy. These motors will be more efficient and longer lasting than our existing motors. The new motor series will replace the existing motors, which start to become unavailable as the new regulation goes into effect.

The low down on raising the standards of motor efficiency.
Electric motors consume an estimated 23% of all U.S. electricity sold forcing motor efficiency regulations to become stricter in the U.S. From 2013 to 2040, US industrial energy consumption will grow 2% per year. The energy costs of operating an electric motor represents more than 94 percent of its life cycle cost, while the initial purchase price of a motor represents only a small fraction of this cost. A typical 5 HP gearmotor operating for 24 hours will cost $8.77 per day. 5 Hp x .746 kWh/Hp x $0.098/kW-hr x 24-hour operation = $3,202/year energy expense. 148 days of operation is equivalent to the purchase price of the motor. Over 10-years, that is equivalent to $32,020 in total energy costs. A SAVINGS OF $1,084OVER 10 YEARS PER PREMIUM GEARMOTOR COMPAIRED TO STANDARD
10 GEARMOTORS = $10,840
150 GEARMOTORS = $162,600
500 GEARMOTORS = $542,000
Less energy consumption = Cost savings $$$$
Sumitomo optimized its existing external envelope, while still accommodating a large motor core. The result is a compact premium efficient motor which reduces the impact on our customers. Optimized Envelope, Minimal Height Difference
The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has expanded the scope for premium
efficient motors in the country. The Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPAct), as amended by Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA07), requires many previously exempt motors to meet Premium Efficiency class, or International Efficiency 3 (IE3) design, by June 1, 2016. After this date only DOE compliant motors can be imported or manufactured in the U.S. and non-compliant motors will be subject to penalties.
SMA’s new premium efficiency integral motors are compact, durable and reliable, minimizing the impact the regulation has on customer applications.
